Cricket was played by women in many locations in the early 70s; however, the sport was not organized. Shanta became the very first Indian female cricketer to reach 100 runs in international cricket, and Sandhya Agarwal made a world record of 191 runs in one innings during a test match in England in 1986. In addition, Neetu Davidโ€™s 8-53 against England in 1995-96 was the best bowling performance for a Test match.

The Indian government has acknowledged the achievements of women cricketers by conferring the famous Arjuna Award to the following women: Shanta Rangaswamy, Diana Edulji, Shubhangi Kulkarni, and Sandhya Agarwal.

India participated in the World Cup competitions in 1978, 1982, 1993, and 1997. The third World Cup in 1978 was hosted by the WCAI, which was in existence for just five years and did not have major sponsors.

In the same way, for the 2nd time in India, this World Cup was held in 1997, and record-breaking 11 nations took part. Hero Honda sponsored this tournament which sparked a great deal of interest across the nation.
