What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. What is Covered in the IELTS Test?

The test for proficiency in the English language is executed to assess the overall ability to read, write, listen, and speak in English. The ability is graded on the scale of one to nine. ย

You will be played a particular audio file wherein you are required to listen to what is being spoken before answering questions depending on the sound clip.

IELTS Syllabus & Exam Pattern

The IELTS syllabus is divided into the following sections -writing, speaking, reading, and listening. All of these sections help in assessing the command of the candidates over the English language. All the sections of the IELTS exam are completed within a single day. There are no breaks in between. ย 

Candidates can look forward to completing the Speaking section for up to one week before or after the test. The total duration for any IELTS test is 2 hours 45 minutes. The IELTS exam features around 82 questions along with a dedicated oral interview. The score for the IELTS exam will typically range between 0 & 9. The test is executed in two different modes -on computer and paper. ย 

For sitting in the Listening section of the exam, candidates have around 30 minutes along with 10 minutes of transfer time for answering 40 questions. The Reading Section also features 40 questions. The candidates will receive around 60 minutes to answer the existing questions. ย 

As far as the Writing section of the exam is concerned, you will have to answer 2 questions -going on for around 60 minutes. The English Speaking test lasts for around 11-15 minutes. The section is reported in half or full bands after an oral interview is conducted with the examiner. ย 

In IELTS, the Reading Section features 3 paragraphs or 40 questions in total. The examโ€™s duration is 60 minutes. Ever question has one mark. Both general and academic training test formats remain the same for the Reading section in IELTS.

โ— IELTS Syllabus for the Reading Section: The reading section of the IELTS General Training exam has three dedicated sections with increasing difficulty levels. There is also the presence of 1-2 or even more short-form texts. The next section of the exam has two separate sections. In the last section, there is a long text as well. ย 

The total test features around 2175 to 2750 words. The test helps in assessing the ability of the candidate to understand basic English while living in an English-speaking nation. ย ย 

โ— IELTS Syllabus for the Writing Section: The writing section of the exam is expected to be written in full answers. Short notes or bullet points are not accepted. There are two primary tasks in the writing section. It is compulsory for the candidates to complete both the tasks.

ย Under the first task, students are asked to describe any type of visual information like charts or graphs. In 20 minutes, candidates are asked to write around 150 words. In the second task, you will be asked to write around 250 words in a span of 40 minutes. The section is available as an argument or view that you are expected to discuss.

โ— IELTS Syllabus for the Listening Section: As per the IELTS 2022 syllabus, there are different sub-sections. These sections focus on both educational needs and social needs. In the listening section, conversations can be dialogues or monologues. These are for 3-4 minutes. Candidates can listen to the clips only once. There are around 40 questions and the duration of the section is around 30 minutes. ย
